Cancellation, Returns & Refunds

Each piece by India Design House (IDH) is handcrafted, and we take care at every stage to make sure it reaches you the way it left our studio. If something isn’t as expected, we’ll review it with care and resolve it in accordance with our policy — this page sets out how.

This page is a plain-language summary of our policy. The full and binding terms are in our Terms & Conditions, which prevail in case of any difference in wording.

1. Cancelling an order
  • Furniture, wooden floor lamp(s) & framed prints: once the order is confirmed and sent for production, it cannot be cancelled.
  • All other products: you may cancel within 24 hours of order confirmation by writing to hello@indiadesignhouse.com.
  • Intermediate & bulk orders: cannot be cancelled once production has started.

We may also cancel or withdraw an order — for example, if a product was listed at an incorrect price, if stock is no longer available, or in the scenarios set out in our T&C. In that case, we refund the full amount within 7 working days.

2. When you're eligible for a replacement or refund

You can claim a replacement or refund if the product is:

  1. Received with a material defect
  2. Not of merchantable quality
  3. Not fit for use
  4. Received damaged in transit
  5. Different from what you ordered
  6. Outside the stated specifications to a significant degree
  7. Recalled by IDH

For bespoke pieces, we will first attempt a repair. If repair isn't feasible, we refund in full. IDH decides, at its discretion, whether to repair, replace, or refund.

3. How to report damage or a defect

Step 1 — Record an unboxing video

Please video-record the unboxing of every IDH order as a default practice. The video must:

  • Begin with the sealed package
  • Show the entire unboxing and unwrapping
  • Clearly highlight any defect or damage

For electrical products (e.g. lamps), any defect should also be videographed, not only photographed.

Step 2 — Write to us within 48 hours of delivery

Email hello@indiadesignhouse.com with:

  • Your order number
  • A short description of the issue
  • The unboxing video
  • High-resolution photographs of the damage: at least 3 angles, plus one zoom-in and one zoom-out shot

Claims received after 48 hours, or without the video and photographs, may not be considered. We may also ask for additional information or documents to assess the claim.

4. What happens next
  1. We acknowledge your email and will review the claim within 7 business days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays).
  2. We may request more information or arrange to collect the product for inspection, at our cost.
  3. If a defect or damage is confirmed:
    • Standard products: we will review the issue and arrange a repair, or part replacement, or full replacement, as appropriate.
    • Bespoke products: we issue a full refund (if repair is not feasible).
  4. Refunds are made to the original payment source within 7–10 business days of approval. If a refund to the source isn't possible, we'll contact you for alternate bank details. Any delay at your bank's end is outside our control.
  5. If a defect or damage is not confirmed, the claim will not be approved. If we had collected the product for inspection, we'll return it — re-shipping costs are payable by you, in advance.
5. What isn't a defect

Examples (not an exhaustive list — full detail is in our T&C):

IDH pieces are handcrafted, and small variations are part of their character, not faults. The following are not considered defects or grounds for replacement or refund:

All products

  • Normal wear, ageing, or weathering consistent with the material
  • Damage from improper use, or use contrary to the material description and care instructions
  • Personal preference regarding colour, finish, or design
  • Damage from outdoor use, direct sunlight, high-humidity environments, or non-residential use. IDH products are designed for indoor residential use only, unless otherwise stated or approved in writing by us.

Furniture

  • Natural grain, knots, colour variation, and seasonal movement of solid wood
  • Minor tool marks, surface irregularities, or handcraft variations that don't affect function
  • Small variations in tone, polish, or finish
  • Dimensional variation up to ±5% of stated measurements
  • Wobbliness caused by uneven flooring at your end
  • Pest infestation occurring after delivery, where the piece was not infested on dispatch

Lamps

  • Subtle variation in tone or finish of the lamp body
  • Dimensional variation up to ±5% (wood) and ±10% (cotton mâché)
  • Minor surface irregularities that don't affect function or electrical safety
  • Any damage, injury, or electrical incident from incompatible bulbs, accessories not recommended in the care sheet, rewiring or modification by anyone, or improper installation

Cotton mâché décor

  • Minor surface texture, small air pockets, and subtle colour gradation from the handcraft process
  • Dimensional variation up to ±10%
  • Any damage from outdoor placement, moisture, humidity, or use as a vessel for water, flowers, fruit, or any liquid or organic material. Cotton mâché must not hold water or be placed outdoors.

Textiles

  • Subtle tonal variation from natural dyeing
  • Minor shrinkage of 3–5% after the first professional dry-clean, softening of hand-feel with use, and natural slub in the weave
  • Minor variation in embroidery density, thread tension, or pattern registration
  • Damage, colour loss, or distortion from machine wash, hand wash, steam, or any method other than professional dry-cleaning. All IDH textiles must be professionally dry-cleaned only.
  • Slight differences in fabric texture between product and website photographs

Framed prints

  • Subtle tonal differences between print and screen display
  • Intentional distortion, non-uniform ink distribution, or undefined boundaries inherent to abstract art
6. What does count as a material defect

Examples (not an exhaustive list — full detail is in our T&C):

  • Furniture: wobbliness on level flooring, weak or misaligned joints, cracked or split wood beyond natural variation, termite damage at delivery, structural failure under normal use
  • Lamps: deep structural cracks, loose wiring, sparking, non-functional switch on first use, detached socket, non-insulated wiring, burning smell under normal use, base unable to stand upright
  • Cotton mâché: deep structural cracks, mould at delivery, significant paint peeling within 30 days under normal indoor use, base unable to stand upright
  • Textiles: stitching unravelling on first use, size materially beyond ±5%, broken zipper, significant colour bleeding after proper dry-cleaning, fabric tearing under normal handling
  • Framed prints: blurred image (not artistic intent), visible lines across the print, fading within weeks, wrong design, frame cracks or open joints, peeling lamination, major scratches, cloudy viewing surface

Transit damage reported within 48 hours — with the required video and photographs — is also treated as a material defect.

7. Refunds and transaction fees

Payment gateway transaction fees on refunds are borne by IDH where:

  • We cancel an order for reasons on our side (pricing error, stock unavailability, force majeure, or other reasons on our side as set out in our Terms and Conditions)
  • A confirmed defect, damage, or recall leads to a refund

They are borne by the purchaser where the order is cancelled at your request in the circumstances set out in our T&C (including certain cancellations in bespoke and bulk orders).

8. Warranty on resale and purchases outside IDH

The refund and replacement rights on this page apply only to products purchased directly from www.indiadesignhouse.com or our authorised retailers and marketplace vendors. Purchases from any other source are not covered.

If you resell an IDH piece privately (non-commercial), these rights don't automatically transfer. They can be extended on a case-by-case basis with our prior written approval, requested within:

  • 6 months of original purchase for furniture
  • 3 months for lamps
  • 1 month for textiles

Any such extension is at IDH's sole discretion and does not create an obligation to extend in any case

Commercial reselling, rebranding, or reproduction of IDH products is strictly prohibited.
